Remco Evenepoel has recently talked about the crash he suffered in December which changes a lot in his 2025 season, and also the consequences it has in terms of schedule. He reveals the race in which he is hopeful to return to racing and also that the possibility of racing the Giro d'Italia is off the table.
Fractured ribs, scapula, hand and bruised lungs were the consequences of a collision with a van door that was opening. A brutal outcome that takes him off the bike for a full month, but "there were more injuries too," he said in words to DH. "Especially that dislocated collarbone, where all the surrounding joints were broken, needed special attention. The recovery will take longer than after a previous crash".
It's not been a bright year injury wise for the Belgian, who had already suffered a fractured collarbone and shoulder blade on the mass crash that happened at Itzulia Basque Country this year.
"It's slowly improving; daily, I feel minor improvements. Sometimes, I still feel some pain in my shoulder. That means the injury is still healing and serious, after all. At home, I wear increasingly fewer slings to support my arm. When I go outside, I still wear it to avoid any wrong movement or contact," he details, telling that on the 9th January he will have an important check up on his health status that can prove key for him to begin training again. "I hope I will get the green light to start riding on the rollers, combined with power sessions with the physio. That will also be necessary to get a rhythm for the Tour".
Most likely, a month on the rollers, and then restart his preparation for the 2025 season. Most likely it would then include two months of training before starting his season at the Ardennes classics. "The idea is to resume in the Brabantse Pijl and then ride the hilly classics to win" - he refers to Amstel Gold Race, La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Lièges.
"his also means that the Giro d'Italia is out of the table for the Belgian: "I can't help but accept it as it is. It will be a special year, but I must look ahead and adjust to the circumstances," he concluded.
