Stage 7 of the Giro d'Italia isn't the first mountain stage, but could possibly be the first battle on uphill terrain. Remco Evenepoel is still recovering from injuries, but after stage 6 he's commented on his main rival Primoz Roglic.
"I have the impression that Roglic is a bit nervous," Evenepoel told Eurosport, likely trying to begin a psychological battle into the mountains. "He knows he is 44 seconds behind. The Jumbo-Visma riders also look a bit nervous in the peloton, but that's their style. They push a lot."
The two have not gone unscathed from the opening days of the race. Roglic was caught up in a late crash on stage 5 and had a late mechanical on stage 6, whilst Evenepoel crashed twice en route to Salerno. Despite some bruises he's reported good feelings today, and could be back on the pink jersey again tomorrow if the race is attacked as Andreas Leknessund isn't expected to remain in the lead of the race.
"After Tuesday's time trial and stage, I think I'm the strongest at the moment. For now, it's an ideal scenario for us. In Catalunya I was behind, now I'm ahead. No stress, but more for them I think," Evenepoel concluded. He's finished this afternoon's stage safely in the peloton.
