Andy Schleck is present at the current
Tour de France and has shared his thoughts on the battle for the overall classification. The Luxembourger has no doubts that despite
Tadej Pogacar having his best level,
Jonas Vingegaard is still capable of beating him.
"Pogacar, obviously, is there. We expected him. But Vingegaard is also there, and he's not coming to finish second," Schleck said in an interview with
Cyclism'Actu. The Dane has put in a storming performance to keep up with the World Champion on stage 4, in terrain that on paper seemed to suit Pogacar quite better.
"He believes in his chances. We forget too quickly that he's already dominated Pogacar. He did it last year in the time trial (correction: two years ago, ed.) by two minutes, he's already won it in the mountains".
Realistically the fight for this Tour's victory will be only between two riders, who already seem a level above the rest after four stages. At the Criterium du Dauphiné Pogacar seemed to win the overall classification with ease, but that may not be the case at the Grand Boucle.
"He knows how to do it. He had perfect preparation this year, without a crash. So, for me, he deserves a five-star rating for the victory as well. Pogacar is strong, but everyone gets beaten one day. Maybe 2025 will be his year of defeat".
Stage 5 of the race will already be an important day for the GC contenders as the time-trial in Caen will open up gaps between the GC riders further, and potentially open up also some significant differences between the two - although it is hard to say in favour of who. It cannot be forgotten however that the first week will still present quite a few treacherous stages where focus will be necessary not to lose unnecessary time.
