Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic... The so called 'big 4' Grand Tour contenders, on paper, are all open to race the Giro d'Italia. But we do not have to wonder anymore if any will. Primoz Roglic has been confirmed to aim for the Giro, and will then race the Tour after right after!
Big news emerge from the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe camp this Saturday, as the managers and riders open up to the media about their goals and plans for the 2025 season. Talking to a group of journalists, as reported by In de Leidertrui, team manager Ralph Denk did not keep the mystery regarding the Slovenian's calendar for the upcoming season:
"It was a fairly easy choice. He normally finishes in the Vuelta, so it's better that I start with the first Grand Tour of the year now, also now that we are going through Slovenia in the Giro. The Tour was also an easy choice".
Short but to the point. Primoz Roglic, winner of the 2023 edition, will make a comeback to the Corsa Rosa after understanding that a Tour win is a huge task at hand with rivals such as Tadej Pogacar and rival Jonas Vingegaard. He had hinted that he may go for a calendar that will split him for racing against his compatriot, and had been heavily rumoured to start the Giro which should start in the Eastern European nation of Albania next spring.
Denk confirmed at the same time that Roglic will then race the Tour de France, replicating the schedule Pogacar had this spring - proving that you can race both at the highest level in modern cycling. The 35-year old has the Tour as the one Grand Tour left to win in his palmarès, and it is a very big goal for win to still win it one day.
Roglic was on the fight for the podium at the Tour this year, before he crashed out of the race for the third consecutive time. He bounced back to win the Vuelta a España, a strong performance to bring his first Grand Tour since joining the German team, where he also put out some of his very best climbing performances.
"The focus is on the three biggest races, we are confident that we will be competitive. This program has been drawn up in consultation with the riders," Denk concluded. More details from the team are expected today.
