Following his retirement from the professional peloton after nearly two decades at Team Visma | Lease a Bike, Robert Gesink has been reflecting on some of his favourite teammates from years gone by. It seems, not many made more of a positive impact of the Dutchman than Primoz Roglic.
Gesink and Roglic rode together for eight seasons in total, combining for a number of notable results including Vuelta a Espana victories for the Slovenian. In conversation with Wieler Revue, Gesink explains how Roglic must go down as one of his favourite teammates from the entirety of his career in the professional peloton.
"If I look at someone who meant a lot to me for years, it's Primoz," begins the 38-year-old Visma stalwart warmly. "Not only on the road, but also on a personal level there was fun. He is a real fighter who throws himself into the fight for one hundred percent."
"If you go to a Grand Tour, you want him in your team to make it difficult for Tadej Pogacar," Gesink continues. "Primoz brings so much power and with that you can attack."
Upon leaving Visma, Gesink's influence on the likes of Roglic was noted in a farewell message from the team. "What do world-class riders like Jonas Vingegaard, Wout van Aert, Sepp Kuss, Steven Kruijswijk, Olav Kooij, Wilco Kelderman, and Primoz Roglic have in common? They all gained invaluable experience from you, Robert, and learned the finer details of the sport through your guidance," read part of a goodbye to the Dutchman posted on the team's official social media pages.
