Nairo Quintana had the best legs at Montagne du Lure and managed to put enough time on the competition to not only win the final stage, but to take the overall win. in the
Tour de la Provence.
A strong breakaway went up the road as race leader's teammate Luke Rowe (INEOS Grenadiers) was given the freedom and was joined by Romain Combaud (Team DSM), Alexis Gougeard (B&B Hotels - KTM), JOnathan Couanan (Nice Métropole Côte d'Azur) and Nicolas Debeaumarché (Go Sport - Roubaix Lille Métropole).
The group rode strong and kept their lead until the final climb, where Combaud went solo to try and lead the race as long as possible which he's done until the final five kilometers.
TotalEnergies pushed the pace before the final climb and caused some splits on a small descent, but everything settled down as the peloton reached the base of Montagne du Lure.
Groupama's Bruno Armirail led the peloton for almost half the climb, with then Deceuninck taking up the pace as the peloton rolled gently up the mountain. After Combaud was caught Team Arkéa - Samsic hit the front in a sharp team attack and launched Nairo Quintana.
After a set of attacks he managed to distance
Julian Alaphilippe who was the only rider capable of following his initial move. Quintana had the legs and went solo inside the final four kilometers, with Alaphilippe and Sosa behind chasing.
Julian Alaphilippe was the man to beat and he completely cracked over his attempt to follow Quintana, later caught and dropped by the chasing group from where
Mattias Skjelmose emerged to finish in the second place alongside
Matteo Jorgenson.
Quintana took 37 seconds on his closes competitors, 47 on Alaphilippe and 1:21 on former race leader
Filippo Ganna.
