A long-range solo win is always an incredibly impressive feat for a rider. A long-range solo win at the Tour of the Alps however, is something that requires extra attention given the obviously mountainous parcours of a race set in the region. On stage 3 of the 2025 edition, Israel - Premier Tech's Marco Frigo put in one of these performance, adding a first pro win to his palmares in style.
Part of what was originally a massive 21-rider breakaway, Frigo wasted little time riding amongst the group. Instead, the Italian launched his eventually race-winning move on the first categorised climb of the day - the Furkelpass, soloing clear of the chase with well over 50km still to go. Although the fight for the GC did bring the main favourites close, Frigo held on in the end to secure a sensational success.
“It has been a great day. We knew it could be a breakaway day today and we paid attention to that. Luckily I entered a big group, but big groups can be chaos. I knew it was probably a good idea to make the selection from distance," reflects the 25-year-old in a post-race press release from the Israel - Premier Tech team. “Actually, the attacks today were me trying to test the legs because I’m here at this race for a bit of preparation. I didn’t believe in the first part [that I could win], but once the gap was increasing I did everything I could.”
“I remembered what happened at the Vuelta last year [when he was second on stage 6] in the same situation – Ben O’Connor attacked from far and he went to the finish. I had good legs, of course, and it was good to race at my pace," Frigo added. “This is my first professional victory, I did it my way, solo, so I’m super happy.”
