In a thrilling finale to stage 3 at the 2025 Tour of the Alps, Israel - Premier Tech's Marco Frigo has taken the first win of his professional career, holding off the GC chasers after an incredible solo of more than 50km.
A massive 21-man breakaway forced their way clear of the peloton early on. Among the notable names involved included the likes of Lennard Kamna, Alessandro De Marchi, Michael Valgren, Davide Bais and best placed on GC Florian Stork, key domestique to Tudor Pro Cycling Team's race leader Michael Storer. On the first big climb of the day, Hugh Carthy countered from the peloton, bridged the gap and increased the numbers in the lead group.
As is often the case with breaks this big, it wasn't too long before things started to split apart again. On the Cat 1 Furkelpass, Israel - Premier Tech's Marco Frigo attacked solo at the head of the race, entering the final 50km around 1:30 clear of his breakaway chasers, with the peloton at around 2:30 down the road. In truth, although Frigo was obviously strong, not many would have given the Italian much hope of the win. But as he entered the final 20km still solo at the head of the race, Frigo had increased his lead to nearly two minutes over the chase and four minutes to the peloton.
Somewhat surprisingly, leading the chase behind Frigo was his own teammate, Matthew Riccitello with the American launching clear of the GC group on the final climb of the day, then catching and passing the remainder of the break to begin hunting down his teammate. Calling that Israel - Premier Tech strategy into question, Riccitello was caught by the GC group 5km to go, but his attack had cut Frigo's lead to less than a minute.
Thankfully for the Italian however, with the majority of that final 5km downhill, Frigo had enough advantage to hold on to the stunning solo stage win, the first victory of his career. Behind, Jai Hindley, Giulio Ciccone and Derek Gee battled out for the sprint.
