Thomas Gloag's season ended as early as it had begun. The Visma | Lease a Bike rider crashed during a training and suffered fractures to both his elbows. The Brit has undergone a surgery to treat his injuries which won't allow him to compete again this autumn.
"Unfortunately Thomas Gloag will not be able to race anymore this season," begins the statement issued by Gloag's team. "The Brit broke his elbows after a crash in a training ride. He has undergone successful surgery and must now rest for a month. As a result, he will not race again this season."
Gloag was among the first to have been struck by Visma | Lease a Bike's weird curse after the Giro 2023 victory of his then teammate Primoz Roglic. Ultimately, the Briton who suffered a serious knee injury spent nearly a year out of competition with the team allowing him to take time to fully recover.
The 22-year-old finally made a return to action at the Czech Tour (2.1) at the end of this July, winning one of the mountain stages with an impressive mountain solo and finishing 13th overall. Everything seemed to be moving in the right direction for Gloag's full return.
After the Czech race, the Brit climber did not finish World Tour classic in San Sebastian. Last week, he continued with a start at the Lidl Deutschland Tour (2.Pro) where he took an okay 20th overall in a race which lacked high mountains which would allow Gloag to truly shine.
With month and a half left of the 2024 season, Gloag was surely going to try for a GC on some of the smaller stage races, however that is not an option anymore as his primary focus shifts to recover from yet another blow, setting his sights already on a (hopefully) better 2025 campaign.
