Despite Lennert Van Eetvelt's strong performances uphill, Lotto-Intermarché is not having good first few days at this Giro d'Italia. The Belgian team already lost its sprinter star Arnaud De Lie whose health problems have worsened during the start of this week, forcing the 24-year-old's abandon. And he might not be the last victim of Famenne Ardenne Classic's 'shitshow' as teammate Milan Menten's continuation at this Giro is up in the air.
"We had hoped that Arnaud would be doing better after the rest day, but today he was having stomach trouble again," sighs on-site sports director Pieter Vanspeybrouck in a reaction for Sporza.
But De Lie was not the only cause for concern on the team today. Alongside De Lie, also teammates Milan Menten and Liam Slock were infected by this illness. While the latter had to withdraw from this Giro and was replaced by Joshua Giddings, Menten is the last of the trio remaining in the race. At least for the time being.
"Today it was also hanging by a thread for Milan Menten. Because I hear that he had to throw up twice during the stage. Menten traveled to the Giro a day later last week due to stomach problems, but just like De Lie, he hasn't managed to get rid of the stubborn bug. We need to see tonight whether it is wise to keep Milan in the Giro," Vanspeybrouck concluded.
