One of Mathieu's indelible memories must be when he was denied his first victory in Paris-Roubaix by Sonny Colbrelli. Colbrelli refused to contribute, instead saving himself to match MVDP's accelerations on the cobbles, and banking on winning the sprint against a diminished and frustrated favorite. He did get the victory, but it will hardly go down as one of the bold exploits of a great champion.
The new generation of superstars seem to race for their own chances, rather than against any one particular rider. I think the sport is better for it. The people who claim to be bored by Pogacar will always find something to be bitter about.
That said, a path to a potential victory would have been for MVDP to drop back to ride with Remco, who was on an unbelievable day. Despite conceding time on the climbs, he held the front two on a short leash for a long time, even as they benefited from a huge draft behind the lead motorcycles riding side by side. I think riding together they might have overhauled Pogacar on the flats after the last climb. But it would be a weird tactic.
That said, the race was brilliant. Five of the 6 or 7 strongest one-day riders in the world finished alone, exhausted, and in perfect order.- Lots of people think Pogi is doping but take a look at Paul Seixas. he's doing similar superhuman performances at a much earlier age. Science, training and nutrition has also come a long way. But some of these guys are just more superior than the rest. They would not jeopardize their career and achievements for doping. It's just not worth it. Look at how Armstrong gets treated these days. Nobody would want that kind of disgrace and humiliation, especially the humble Pogacar. Just not worth it in my opinion.
- I say.... Let him take a shot at TdF -- even if he falters over the next couple of stages @ Itzulia, which I don't think he will. If his performance only ends up being average at TdF, then it's okay. If he does great, then great! Sports world has changed... just like American football, rookie QBs are starting/playing in their first year... whereas years ago, they had to "learn" behind the starting QB.
- He is turning out to be more impressive than expected. Wow.
- Did they watch the race last year? Where a select group went out, during and after Arenberg, and it was whittled down slowly until the end, when a visibly exhausted Pogačar made an error and ended up only second? Last year's race already addresses most of what this article claims. The remaining issue is where to get rid of Van der Poel, and what level of power is needed in the last major 4 and 5 star sections to shake him off. Pogačar may end up helping Van der Poel get away from all the rest, but he'll be helping himself along the way, as well.
- I think Pogi is wiping sweat from his forehead today
- Yes, I think they are not doping. I think that people who post this kind of thing are dopes, though. Is that the same thing?
- Ooh man. What a race! Paul Seixas is the real deal. Finally, Pogi has some real competition if Seixas enters TdF. I didn't expect Del Toro to crack like that. Cmon Torito.
- Pogi, I hope you're watching this and taking notes. No messing around this summer because Seixas is no Johan Hansen Vingegaard. This is a phenomenon and we finally have the best era in cycling history on the horizon.
If Seixas decides to come to the Giro, Jonas Hansen will get a job at the Glynore fishmonger again, but he's a lucky little 🐟 because no one is interested in the Giro.
Now we all know why Jonas chose Paris-Nice instead of Basque Country. Is the 🐟 still the second best GC in the world, or is he third?
- Some cycling journalists ("experts") are comparing Remco at 19 against Seixas at 19. Seixas is the professor for Remco when he was 19. No, these journalists are not normal? Seixas is currently the second best GC cyclist in the world and is seriously threatening Pogi for the Tour, but foolish journalists are comparing him to Remco at 19... LOL 🤣🤣🤣🤣
