The Vuelta a Burgos was a platform for a lot of the contenders for the Vuelta a Espana to show their current status and how the work has been throughout the last few months, and Miguel Ángel López is one of the riders who came out with the best feedback from it.
“It was my first race after a big break, and I came here after a long period of recovering after my injury from the Giro d’Italia. So, I can say that I am quite happy with my performance here," López said in a post-race interview. The Colombian abandoned the Giro d'Italia suddenly in the opening week due to a nagging hip injury that kept him off the bike for weeks.
His return to the peloton was delayed after he was suspended by the team due to a possible involvement in a drug trafficking case, however has in the days following been dismissed. He made his return in Burgos where he finished the race in third after an aggressive performance on both mountain stages.
"...After such a long period I am still missing the racing rhythm and this is normal, I still need some time to get in form. I was hoping for a good result in this race and today I tried my best to win the stage and to reach the final podium," he said.
On the queen stage to Lagunas de Neila he was the most aggressive rider in the finale, but INEOS Grenadiers and Pavel Sivakov managed to keep the race under control. He went on to finish second just behind João Almeida on the day, but was nevertheless satisfied with his performances in the Spanish race.
"Well, I could not win, but I got a place on the final podium, and I also won the mountain jersey, so this week looks good to me. I would like to thank my teammates for a great support during these five days, it was something special," he concluded. With fresh legs and his climbing prowess on point, López will be a serious contender for the upcoming Vuelta a Espana.
