Medical Report Vuelta a Espana 2023 | Final update stage 21

Medical Reports. The Vuelta a Espana is one of the most tense and chaotic races in the world, and unfortunately, that also leads to plenty of riders suffering from crashes and injuries. In this article, you will find frequent updates on some of the events that happen throughout the race regarding these incidents.

Stage 1

The opening team time-trial of the race was absolutely brutal. The very wet roads and technical course led to plenty crashes, some serious, some less serious. Laurens de Plus was the worst affected, the INEOS Grenadiers rider suffered an injury to the pelvis.

Stage 2

A rainy day, it again saw many crashes. Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas were among them, even if without consequences. Jason Osbourne crashed and suffered hip trauma, Pelayo Sánchez suffered bruising and road rash in the face and nose, race leader Lorenzo Milesi suffered a big hit in the left elbow, whilst Jasha Sutterlin and Rein Täramaae were also reported to suffer some injuries in the medical report.

Oscar Onley was the worst afected rider out of the bunch, the Briton abandoned the race with a fractured collarbone.

Stage 3

It was a day that was somewhat calmer and saw less crashes, however it was not the situation in the following of the stage finish. Remco Evenepoel crashed moments after winning the stage, hitting a soigneur who was standing after the finish line. The new race leader has suffered an open wound in his head which saw him bleeding quite a lot.

Stage 4

Marijn van den Berg crashed almost in sight of the line, but was relatively unharmed. That wasn't the case for Santiago Buitrago who was involved in a late crash. Alongside him so did Wilco Kelderman who suffered several contusions, Bryan Coquard who sufered lumbar injuries, Ruben Guerreiro with a shoulder contusion and Julius Johansen with multiple contusions, mainly in the knee.

Stage 5

The day started off immediately with three riders not taking up to the start, all suffering from injuries from the mass crash the day before. Kobe Goossens, Ruben Guerreiro and Bryan Coquard were all DNS on stage 5. Team Jayco AlUla then had the two riders who abandoned throughout the day, both leaders Eddie Dunbar and Filippo Zana, suffering from injuries and stomach issues respectively. Julius Johansen has suffered a crash once again.

Stage 6

Romain Combaud and Lenny Martínez were among those who have crashed today but have not suffered meaningful injuries from it. It was another day with plenty abandons, two early crashes have spelt the end of the race for Jay Vine due to elbow, hand and knee trauma; and Lorenzo Milesi who suffered many wounds.

Andrea Bagioli of Soudal - Quick-Step abandoned the race early on with illness and Team Jayco AlUla's Michael Hepburn left the race with injuries still hampering him since the first day of the race.

Stage 7

The likes of Geraint Thomas and Sepp Kuss hit the deck today, another crash-filled day at the Vuelta where serious damage was inflicted. Plenty riders hit the deck throughout the day but none worst than Thymen Arensman, the only DNF on the day, who's reportedly suffered facial injures and a fractured collarbone.

Stage 8

The day saw more crashes as the riders keep finding a tense peloton. João Almeida a big contender for a top result in the race was victim of one early in the day, but did manage to recover to finish close to the front. Meanwhile the race did see the abandons of Sam Gaze and Pierre Latour, with the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider suffering from ilness and Latour suffering from a crash suffered recently.

Stage 9

Despite the strong wind and tough day out, there were no abandons on stage 9. Plenty riders did hit the deck however. Damiano Caruso, Rein Taaramäe, Rubén Fernandez, Antonio Tiberi, Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda, Javier Romo, Milan Menten, Jarrad Drizners and Egan Bernal were all mentioned in the report to have crashed, with different levels of injuries.

Stage 10

Although the time-trial itself was raced without any meaningful mishaps, crashes of previous days have continued to force riders to abandon. Javier Romo was diagnosed with a fractured vertebrae whilst Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda could also take to the start of the time-trial due to complicated arm injury.

Stage 11

The 11th day of racing was finally a calm one in the peloton, but right before the start of the stage two riders went down. Felix Engelhardt, but most notoriously Juan Ayuso. The Spaniard suffered contusions with superficial wounds on the right shoulder, scapular region, elbow, and knee.

Stage 12

The day was calmer in the peloton, with simple roads and headwind throughout the day. Three riders hit the deck and were noted in the day's medical report: Rudy Molard, Daniel Navarro and Alan Jousseame. All three have suffered small injuries however have continued the race.

Stage 13

Crash-wise the riders have escaped relatively unscathed out of the day, but four riders have not concluded the day. Callum Scotston was the only DNF, succumbing to a viral infection, but three riders did not start the stage, having different health issues: Orluis Aular, Robbe Ghys and Alan Jousseaume.

Stage 14

Jan Tratnik was one of the riders who crashed throughout the day, not good news for Jumbo-Visma. The only abandon on the day was that of Rein Taaramäe.

Stage 15

Tobias Bayer crashed on the day, suffering contusions in the elbow. The stage marked one DNF, it was Arkéa Samsic's Kévin Vauquelin with illness.

Stage 16

Luis León Sánchez was the only rider mentioned in the race's medical report, having crashed and suffered a few contusions in the process. The day start off with the DNS of Top10 contender David de la Cruz due to fever and gastroentritis and Welay Berhe who tested positive for Covid-19. During the stage there were two more abandons in TotalEnergie's Thomas Bonnet and Intermarché-Circus-Wanty's Rune Herregodts.

Stage 17

Geoffrey Bouchard was the only rider to abandon on the day, however a few more have crashed. Rui Oliveira, Omar Fraile, Matevz Govekar and José Manuel Díaz have all hit the deck early in the day in a small mass crash, suffering different levels of injuries.

Stage 18

Nothing to note.

Stage 19

Damien Touzé of AG2R Citroën Team has not started the stage, a day that was mostly calm but then saw a big crash almost at the finish. Kaden Groves did not crash but tumbled off the bike, teammate Tobias Bayer did fall and suffered a few contusions. Team DSM-Firmenich saw three riders go down - who celebrated after hearing of Alberto Dainese's win. These were Max Poole, Chris Hamilton and Sean Flynn.
