A medical update on Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda on the rest day. The Ecuadorian has not broken anything after a hard fall in the ninth stage, his team says. However the rider has now abandoned the Vuelta a Espana ahead of the time-trial.
"He fell hard on Sunday and tests were needed to confirm he has no fractures. As a team, we hope that he can still recover from this heavy blow in the coming days," his team said on social media.
Cepeda was one of the last riders to reach the finish on Sunday. In 157th place he crossed the finish line alone more than fifteen minutes after Kämna. Earlier this grand tour, the 27-year-old Ecuadorian managed to finish tenth at Javalambre.
UPDATE: Cepeda has abandoned the race this afternoon. Despite the Spanish team's best efforts to see the Ecuadorian recover, he ultimately can not take to the start of today's time-trial. He had performed very well in the mountainous stages so far in the Vuelta and sat inside the Top10 after being part of the breakaway into the Alto de Javalambre stage.
