Since Lotto Dstny confirmed that it had reached an agreement with Maxim van Gils for his contract termination we knew that the Belgian rider was going to end up in a rival World Tour team. Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe had been highly rumoured to sign the Belgian rider but now there is a credible report that an agreement has been reached.
Thus, according to market expert Daniel Benson, van Gils will ride for Red Bull next season, simultaneously reinforcing it's classics team even further after multiple high-quality signings focused on the one-day races, but also managing to take away from INEOS Grenadiers and Astana Qazaqstan Team - the other two main teams in contention - the possibility of signing a new leader.
Astana this week sent two riders to their development team, freeing up spots in the elite team to make new signings. This could've easily been interpreted as a move to be able to sign a new leader such as van Gils who would be crucial in it's hunt of UCI point. INEOS had a fall out with Tom Pidcock, with his departure confirmed only some days ago we know that there is a spot and a few extra million in the bank that could've also been used on a rider such as van Gils.
At 25 years old, Van Gils has taken a big leap in his career and, although he renewed with Lotto at the beginning of 2024, he looked for something different by the end of the year and has finally obtained it in a year in which he won in Frankfurt, Aargau or Andalusia and came out in the classics: third in Flèche Wallonne and Strade Bianche and fourth place in Liège and Montreal. A great signing for BORA, awaiting official confirmation from the team, which at this moment has not yet taken place.
