Team SD Worx have been their usual, impressive selves at the 2023 Tour de France Femmes so far. An opportunity at a stage win on stage 5 though was passed up with Marlen Reusser having to settle for second place.
"Whether this is a missed opportunity? Of course," admitted the 31-year-old Swiss rider in a post-stage interview after Ricarda Bauernfeind took a solo stage win. "Lotte Kopecky was probably the fastest of this group, but honestly: it's nice that Canyon/SRAM wins. I'm happy for them."
"What can I say? Maybe we miscalculated," Reusser continues. "We slowed down a bit in the pursuit, because we didn't want to collide with extra attacks too early. But maybe we exaggerated a bit."
The day started with a blow for the Team SD Worx squad as Lorena Wiebes was forced to withdraw from the race due to illness. There was also a post-stage sour not as Demi Vollering was given a 20 second time penalty leaving her eight seconds behind her main rival Annemiek van Vleuten in the general classification.
