Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team will be targeting the sprints this month at the Giro d'Italia, as Mark Cavendish will lead the way for the team to wrap off the flat stages. He has talked about his ambitions coming to the race, and his feeling heading into a return to the Giro - which he hasn't raced since 2013.
“I am very happy that he is there. I love riding with Morky [Michael Morkov]. But it's not just Morky, we have a strong team here with riders I trust. I am very happy with this selection. So it's been nine years since I was here. I'm glad to be back, because the Giro is a race I've always enjoyed participating in," Cavendish told reporters before the race. With a leadout consisting of Michael Morkov, Davide Ballerini and Bert van Lerberghe, it's almost certain that Cavendish will be in prime position for a sprint at some point this month, and within range of getting a stage win.
“Obviously, the dynamics of this race have changed slightly in those nine years. Perhaps the Giro has turned out to be something different than I remember. I don't know… We'll see," he added. Cavendish will have several opportunities to go for stage wins, and the goal of returning to the Tour de France is still alive - albeit very unlikely - which will surely put pressure on his shoulders to perform here in Italy.
As for the possibility of the Briton targeting the points jersey, he clearly points out that it's not part of the goals: “No, the points jersey has never been on my mind. I've been saying it for over a decade that the points jersey comes naturally when you're regular with results," he concluded.
