Marianne Vos is not called the best of all time for no reason, and at age she continues to bring in big victories for her palmarès. On stage 6, she has taken her second triumph of the week at
La Vuelta Femenina in an intense uphill sprint.
A seemingly non-treacherous day at the Spanish race, but that wouldn't be the case as early on in the day a group of 19 riders went up the road including very strong figures such as Ellen van Dijk and Kristen Faulkner, which sounded off all alarms and forced a very strong pace in the peloton all throughout the day. However with 46 kilometers to go the gap would be closed, as a consequence of the fast pace and lack of good collaboration in front.
Sarah Roy, Nicole Steigenga and Lea Lin Teutenberg then attacked but were caught in the final hilly section of the stage with 14 kilometers to go, as the likes of Demi Vollering, Anna van der Breggen, Marianne Vos and Liane Lippert sparked the race in front. However they wouldn't work together coherently and were caught by a small peloton that then headed towards a reduced and slightly uphill bunch sprint.
It was quite a difficult one, with a corner in the final 200 meters leading directly to a head-to-head sprint where Marianne Vos managed to take the win, but it required a brutal effort and a photo-finish against
Mischa Bredewold. Far behind, the third position was taken by
Ally Wollaston.
