Trek - Segafredo have been working with full dedication towards Mads Pedersen's ambitions at the Vuelta a Espana, and today was no exception. However, the results weren't the expected for the American team.
“With about 10ks to go and they still had one minute and 15 seconds on the slight downhill it is almost impossible. It’s a pity, when you have such a good plan," Pedersen said after the seventh stage of the race. "The boys did really everything today but sometimes it goes our way and sometimes it doesn’t and today was not our day. Hopefully, we’ll have more chances.”
From early on, Trek controlled the race alongside Team BikeExchange - Jayco. In the main climb of the day the goal was clear - to drop the pure sprinters such as Sam Bennett and Tim Merlier. There was partial success to the move, due to the extensive work of Juan Pedro López, Kenny Elissonde and Antonio Tiberi. However they did not have the power to completely distance the green jersey.
“You saw in the end, my guys tried everything they could, but it was not enough today," he added. After the ascent Trek briefly stopped chasing the day's breakaway - which would end up taking the glory on the day - but the support of other teams had it's riders back on the hunt. It was to no success however as the group held the peloton off, and Pedersen sprinted to ninth place, fourth out of the peloton, but behind Sam Bennett.

“We’re not calculating on support from other teams, we’re calculating on support from ourselves. Of course, we would hope that the chase would start earlier but it didn’t, and we can’t change that. That’s racing and congrats to the breakaway," he concluded.
