Astana Qazaqstan Team have had a very difficult season until today. Samuele Battistella looked to turn the team's Vuelta a Espana around today in Cistierna with a win, but was left disappointed after he finished an incredibly narrow sprint.
"I think I did everything I had to do. I did a really good sprint, but the guy from Cofidis [Jesús Herrada] was just faster. I cannot regret anything," Battistella said after the finish. A frequent performer this season, it was not a surprise to see the 23-year old in the fight for the win on stage seven after he got in the day's breakaway.
His sprint wasn't exactly the strongest in the group, but the Italian had good tactics towards the finale. Starting the sprint from last place in the group, he was able to ride in the slipstream of his rivals until the very last meters after Fred Wright made his bid early. As he crossed the line it almost seemed like he had taken the win, but that fell to Jesús Herrada.
"The cooperation was good in the break. Unfortunately, I lost in the sprint, but I have a good feeling. The Vuelta is still long. We will see what can happen in the coming stages," Battistella concluded.
