After his win at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, a lot of talk has been focused around Remco Evenepoel as his evolution. The 22-year old is so far having a successful season, and his coach has talked about the lead-up to his grand win.
Wielerflits interview Evenepoel's coach Koen Pelgrim, who has said that "...Liège-Bastogne-Liège is in any case the biggest race he has ever won. Because of the way and with this opposition, I can say it's one of the best things we've ever seen from him."
"During the build-up we already had the idea that he had made a big step forward last winter, although he was not always consistent. Every now and then there was a day when he showed less. But during the altitude training course in Tenerife, we saw during an all-in test that he recorded data that we had not seen before.”
Sure enough, at Itzulia Basque Country he displayed his form, by putting on a very aggressive performance throughout the week and heading into the final day in the lead - having completed the race in fourth place overall.
“And you saw that somewhat in the Tour of the Basque Country. It was a pity that he had to give up the leader's jersey on the last day, but on such a terrain, with such steep climbs and so long answering attacks against such strong competition, that was of a very high level."
With the spring out of the way, Evenepoel will now refocus on the second part of his season which will include the Tour of Norway and the Tour de Suisse, where he will be a main favourite for both races.
