Stage 13 of the Giro d'Italia was a dangerous one for the overall classification contenders. Into Cento, on completely flat roads, the riders found strong crosswinds which at times created splits including a few Top20 riders... But ultimately everything remained the same into the finish line and ahead of the final time-trial of the race.
Domenico Pozzovivo was perhaps the most notable figure that was put into difficulty as the peloton got split to bits, but eventually as the pace slowed down, all riders managed to return to the peloton and there was a truce. Tadej Pogacar remains in the race lead with Daniel Martínez in second place 2:40 minutes back; Geraint Thomas is quite close to the Colombian, 2:56 minutes from the pink jersey.
Ben O'Connor, Antonio Tiberi, Romain Bardet, Lorenzo Fortunato, Filippo Zana and Einer Rubio follow but all of them will be put under pressure to defend their position in the time-trial against Thymen Arensman who completes the Top10, 5.28 minutes behind Pogacar.
There have been no changes in the Top20 of the overall classification. Just outside the Top10 we have several riders who are within two minutes of Arensman: Jan Hirt; Michael Storer, Alex Baudin and Domenico Pozzovivo.
The Top20 is completed by Esteban Chaves, Davide Piganzoli, Simon Geschke, Giovanni Aleotti, Juan Pedro López and Aurélien Paret-Peintre. The stage 14 time-trial will create meaningful differences as the race heads north into a 31-kilometer challenge against the clock; and Sunday's mountainous stage into Livigno.
