Jonathan Milan had a brilliant debut season with
Lidl-Trek
in 2024, capped by winning the Giro d’Italia’s points classification. The young
Italian sprinter proved his incredible talent and speed, earning himself a
reputation as one of the brightest rising stars in the peloton. As he looks
ahead to 2025, Milan has his sights set on greater achievements, including his
potential debut at the
Tour de France where he could battle Jasper Philipsen
and Biniam Girmay for the green jersey.
Speaking with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan
expressed his excitement about the challenges that lie ahead. "It is clear
that making his debut on the Tour, who would not like that?" he conceded,
hinting at the allure of competing in cycling’s most prestigious race. While
the Tour remains an ambition, Milan is also focused on refining his abilities.
“To win, you have to make a large number of good decisions in a few moments.
You think, again and again, about what is happening. The sprint is a collection
of moments. I would like to surpass myself, to exceed my limits. I can improve
in everything, from position to power. And in the Classics, I hope to start
learning something.”
Milan’s 2025 schedule is already shaping up to provide
opportunities for growth and success. His spring campaign will begin at the
Tour of Valencia (February 5-9), followed by either the UAE Tour (February
17-23) or Tirreno-Adriatico (March 10-16). These early races will serve as
preparation for Milano-Sanremo, where Milan will test himself on the iconic
course. Additionally, he may take on one of the cobbled monuments, either the
Tour of Flanders or Paris-Roubaix, further expanding his versatility as a rider.
The 2025 season will also see Milan facing stiff competition
from some of the peloton’s best sprinters. He has already pinpointed his key
rivals. "Kooij is a bit more solitary, Merlier is very good at coming from
behind like at the last European Championship. Philipsen has an excellent team
and knows how to use it perfectly. All three are very strong. And they too will
try to improve."
