Lidl-Trek's
Jonathan Milan has sprinted to victory on stage 2 of
Tirreno-Adriatico 2025. After a crash-marred day of drama, the Italian took the win from a bunch sprint ahead of Tudor Pro Cycling Team's
Maikel Zijlaard in Follonica.
With a bunch sprint finish almost guaranteed for today, only a lone rider attempted to deny the peloton from the break. The brave solo breakaway was Manuele Tarozzi of VF Group - Bardiani CSF - Faizanè, gaining himself plenty of time on the TV cameras, even if his chances of taking the win never really looked realistic.
With just over 75km to go, a counter attack from Team Polti VisitMalta duo Alessandro Tonelli and Davide Bais surged clear of the peloton, joining Tarozzi ahead of the day's only categorised climb. On that climb, Bais went solo, taking maximum KoM points at the summit, before the trio regrouped on the flat shortly afterwards.
As the break were then caught at around 37km to go, a crash at the back of the bunch sadly forced David Gaudu into the back of his team car with an abandon. As the race calmed down following that flashpoint, there was no further action ahead of the final circuit. On that though, the race went right next to the coast, meaning winds were a factor and INEOS Grenadiers, the team of race leader Filippo Ganna, were looking to take advantage. This raise in the stress levels of the peloton saw another crash, with Dylan Groenwegen hitting the deck hard, leaving the Dutch national champion a hard chase ahead of the sprint.
In the sprint for the line, Lidl-Trek held the front of the bunch working for Jonathan Milan and once the Italian powerhouse launched there was no stopping him, with a dominant win ahead of Maikel Zijlaard by a bike length or more.
