Jonas Vingegaard is currently training at altitude in Tignes, French Alps, preparing for the
Tour de France. His presence is not certain at the French Grand Tour, but if he does not race there it is unlikely that he will be racing a three-week race in 2024 as the Vuelta a España is apparently out of the plans.
This has been reported by Het Laatste Nieuws this morning. The Belgian news outlet has argued that Vingegaard's presence in the Vuelta is at risk due to family circumstances. It is not clear what this may be. "As a result, he would only have a Grand Tour in his legs this year if he rode the Tour."
Last year Vingegaard returned to the Vuelta for the first time since 2020, the year where he rode his first Grand Tour - and supported Primoz Roglic to the overall victory. Team Visma | Lease a Bike achieved literal history in the race, being the first team in history to have the entire podium in a Grand Tour. Sepp Kuss won the overall classification, but it was agreed within the team that he would win. Vingegaard finished second in the overall classification but still won the summit finishes to the Col du Tourmalet and Bejes.
After suffering a massive setback with the crash at Itzulia Basque Country, Vingegaard has spent the past two months in a race against time to recover his best form ahead of the Tour de France where he hopes to achieve a third overall victory. Is this possible? It's a question that can only be answered with time, but good signs emerge from the Dutch team's camp as the Dane is able to train on the time-trial bike once again.
Alongside Wout van Aert and Christophe Laporte, he has been putting in some intensity work at altitude, and should be joined by Matteo Jorgenson soon, the rider who almost defeated Primoz Roglic at the Criterium du Dauphiné and will certainly have an interesting role at the Tour.
