Jonas Vingegaard has almost certainly guarranteed his maiden
Tour de France win today in Hautacam, after another brutal day on the bike where the GC riders have been taken to the limit and saw massive gaps created between each other.
“It’s incredible. I told my girlfriend and daughter this morning that I wanted to win the stage for them. I’m happy and proud that I won for them," Vingegaard said in the post-race interview. He had the motivation the take the win today, and put on a mighty performance that will be remebered for years to come as he resisted once again the attacks of Tadej Pogacar, and saw
Jumbo-Visma put on a decimating performance.
Attacked on the Col de Spandelles, multiple times, Vingegaard was once again tested but has passed it with the best grade possible, resisting all moves of his Slovenian rival, including the descent where he almost crashed, and made it to the final climb with valuable team support both besides and in front of him.
He explained the tense moment on the final true descent of the race. "When Tadej crashed, he kinda missed a corner and went into some gravel. The bike disappeared under the human and I waited for him," he said. "I have to thank all my team-mates, Wout, Sepp, Tiesj, Nathan, Christophe, everyone was incredible again today".
Then in the final climb, he had the support of Benoot, Kuss and then van Aert who helped him create a gap over Pogacar in the final five kilometers. His climbing prowess saw him then extend the gap by another minute, and take a glorious second stage win.
In his traditional style, he repeated the words he has for a week: "I need to stay focus and keep taking it day by day. I don’t want to talk about winning the Tour yet. Let’s talk about it in two days.” However, now with 3:26 minutes over Tadej Pogacar and a superior team, it will be almost impossible for the Dane to be put under true stress into the last three days of the race.
