Jonas Vingegaard’s
Paris-Nice campaign has come to an abrupt
and disappointing end, with Team Visma | Lease a Bike confirming that the
Danish star will not start today’s stage following his crash on Stage 5.
The incident, which occurred midway through Thursday’s stage,
immediately put Vingegaard on the back foot. Despite continuing to the finish,
he lost significant time on the final climb, relinquishing the leader’s jersey
to his teammate Matteo Jorgenson.
Jorgenson later revealed that Vingegaard initially feared he
had broken his hand, while also suffering from facial pain and dizziness.
However, a team update later in the evening diagnosed only a bruised hand,
providing some relief for both Vingegaard and the team.
Despite the relatively minor injuries, Visma’s medical staff
decided overnight that withdrawing was the best option to ensure proper
recovery. With the Tour de France as his primary focus, there was no sense in
taking unnecessary risks at this stage of the season.
This raises a key question for Team Visma, can Jorgenson now
go on to win the yellow jersey? The American has shown strong form throughout
the race, and with Visma already proving its tactical strength, he has a
genuine chance of securing the overall victory. However, with several tough
stages still to come, he will need to defend against strong competition if he
is to deliver an important win for the team.
