Jay Vine on prioritising family: "At the end of the day when you're on your deathbed, that Tour Down Under plate that I’ve got isn't going to comfort me"

Although at 28 years old, retirement isn't an immediate concern for Jay Vine, the Australian of UAE Team Emirates already has his future all planned out.

Speaking to GCN about his 10-year-plan, Vine explains 2030 is the cut-off time he's set for his career as a professional cyclist. "The goal is 10 years and then back to Australia. But obviously, there's a long time between now and then," he says. "Once I have got that 2030 contract, then it's feet up and retiring."

A key reason for Vine to not outstay his welcome in the sport is his family life. "At the end of the day, if I don't win another race from now on, I'd be happy because I've got personal family goals in mind as well," he explains, but what are those goals? "To have as many kids as my wife will let me!" Vine laughs.

"At the end of the day, family is a big thing for me, I haven't got one yet," Vine concludes. "And at the end of the day when you're on your deathbed, that Tour Down Under plate that I’ve got isn't going to comfort me. It's going to be the future generation."
