The number one Grand Tour rider in the peloton today,
Jonas Vingegaard is totally and utterly dedicated to his aim of winning the
Tour de France. Being an elite athlete isn't all sunshine and rainbows however.
As Vingegaard's wife, Trine Marie Hansen explains in conversation with the Danish newspaper, B.T. life in the eye of the media and the sacrifices that the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader must allow when competing at the very top level mean it's not always easy.
"I don't think it's cool," she says. "That's also why I keep it to what I think is a must in terms of being in the media. Otherwise, I'd really rather stay out of it, but I also feel that I have to give a little with Jonas. But in order not to stress and have it take up too much of our lives, it's something we do on a very limited basis."
With a young daughter, Vingegaard's life on the road also means Hansen is often left to solo parent for much of the year. "It's family and friends - and also those who get on well with Frida (their young daughter ed.) and can be there for her. Then I can also get a break. It's a bit of a mix - but very much those who get on well with Frida," she says of who helps her out when Vingegaard is away. "Socialising means a lot, especially since Frida and I are alone for six months of the year. So it's really good to have a social circle somewhere."
