Movistar Team announced Thursday the exciting addition of talented Spanish cyclist
Javier Romo from
Astana Qazaqstan Team. The young cyclist, born in Villafranca de los Caballeros, Toledo, in 1999, has signed a two-year contract, covering the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with the team led by experienced director Eusebio Unzué.
Javier Romo's story in the world of cycling is one of those that captures everyone's attention. Spain's U23 champion in 2020, Romo made his way into the cycling peloton from triathlon, and his impactful debut did not go unnoticed. His prowess on the bike took him straight to the WorldTour, where he has been honing his craft year after year.
Despite facing two challenging injuries in 2023, including a broken jaw and fistula after a crash in the Itzulia, as well as a broken vertebra in La Vuelta, Javier Romo has proven throughout the season his worth as a cyclist. He achieved important achievements, such as the title of best young rider and an outstanding seventh place in the Vuelta a Burgos. In addition, he demonstrated his aggressiveness in several stages of the Spanish Grand Tour. This impressive progress and the results achieved have catapulted him to a new challenge.
Javier Romo is enthusiastic about his new stage in Movistar Team. "Movistar Team is a new opportunity to continue training as a professional cyclist. I'm looking to put into practice what I've learned these three years at Astana, and having the extra motivation of riding for the Spanish reference team in the top category is a great incentive," said Romo.
The young cyclist has high aspirations for his future with the telephone team: "I want to show that I am a more mature rider than a few years ago and that I can maintain the good level I have shown on some days of the season, but for longer throughout the year. On the other hand, I think I can get victories and also help my teammates to get them."
