The Czech rider from
Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux pulled on an impressive performance on Green Mountain to not only take a big win but also to grab the race lead from
Fausto Masnada who cracked on the final climb.
Jan Hirt is now in prime position to win the overall classification as the peloton heads on to the final day of racing.
Laurenz Rex (Bingoal Pauwels Sauces WB), Antonio Angulo (Euskaltel - Euskadi), Angel Fuentes (Burgos-BH), Filippo Ridolfo (Team Novo Nordisk), Nicolas Vinokourov (Astana Qazaqstan Development Team) and Luca Rastelli (Bardiani-CSF-Faizanè) marked the day's breakaways which was given a very tight leash throughout the day with no more than two minutes frequently being recorded between itsel and the peloton, lead by Intermarché - Wanty - Gobert Matériaux and
Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl Team.
Team DSM once again caused havoc in the peloton as they split it in the crosswinds with around 70 kilometers to go and although the attempt lasted quite a bit there was a junction between groups once again with 46 kilometers to go, with the breakaway caught in the meantime.
The peloton then rolled along into the base of the final climb where Intermarché racked up the pace, Jan Hirt made a move on the final climb, after Rein Taaramäe pushed the pace hard the Czech climber attacked with 1.4 kilometers to go into a brilliant win, his first since the 2016 Tour of Austria.
Arkéa - Samsic's
Kevin Vauquelin and Elie Gesbert finished first and second on the stage climbing up the GC, with race leader Fausto Masnda suffering heavily on the climb and loosing 1:48 to the stage winner, loosing his leader's jersey that seemed confortable after yesterday's stage.
