Filippo Ganna was insatiable in stage 4 of Giro d'Italia. After jumping in and out of the early move, the INEOS Grenadiers rider hadn't had enough and tried his luck once again at the foot of short final ascent Capo Mele.
Despite a gap that initially seemed promising, it was sprinters who had the last laugh in Andora, with Jonathan Milan, Ganna's track colleague, taking down the fast downhill sprint.
While some described Ganna's effort in superlatives, the Italian himself was a bit more down to earth about his performance. "An impressive attack? It wasn't that impressive, otherwise I would have won. So I am disappointed," Ganna told Rai after the finish.
"The attack wasn't planned, it just happened that way. But in the end the sprinters had the last word. If I had jumped a little closer to the top, who knows... I might have made it," said Ganna.
