"It was very special to be able to celebrate this together" - Sepp Kuss survives final Vuelta a Espana obstacle to end in perfection

Only one day left, and it is a celebration stage in Madrid. Jumbo-Visma prepare to win their third Grand Tour of the season. Sepp Kuss has kept his cool and the trio of Jumbo riders crossed the line on stage 20 to seal what is an historic victory.

“Today's stage was an ideal scenario for us. Robert Gesink and Dylan van Baarle had everything under control, they gave everything all day long. They are great! Then Attila Valter took over, and Primoz and Jonas also did a lot of work on the last climb and the flat part," Kuss said in a post-race interview, about to bring the first American Grand Tour win in 10 years. "That is something I never thought possible.”

The stage was much calmer than originally expected due to the team's domination of the race, and only on the final climb did the pace go up. Kuss still needed the legs to respond to attacks of Enric Mas and Mikel Landa that stretched the GC group, however he did so without being put in too many difficulties. The three Jumbo-Visma riders then let the group go, and crossed the line together in an image that will remain in the sport's history.

“It was very special to be able to celebrate this together, and to be able to relax in the last kilometers of a tough mountain stage," Kuss admits. A success of incredible dimensions, that no-one would've expected at the start of the three weeks of racing. "To be able to do that with your two teammates is really cool. I still can't believe it.”
