Cian Uijtdebroeks delivered a very solid performance on stage 2 of the Itzulia Basque Country 2026, leaving a strong impression both in result and race craft. The Belgian from Movistar Team was especially active in the decisive moments, emerging as one of the main drivers in the chase of an untouchable Paul Seixas, who once again showcased his superb form with a commanding win.
Uijtdebroeks crossed the line in the first group of favourites, only behind the Frenchman, which lifts him to 10th overall. Beyond the placing, his ride stood out for repeated accelerations in the final kilometres, where he tried several times to break the group’s rhythm, despite being on explosive terrain which wouldn't ordinarily fit him as well. This offensive approach confirms the Belgian is regaining his touch after a season start disrupted by physical issues, looking increasingly competitive on demanding terrain.
After the stage, he broke down the day’s key move in comments to Cycling Pro Net, referring to the leader’s long-range attack and how the race unfolded from there. “It didn’t surprise me too much. We already saw in yesterday’s time trial that he’s super strong after the effort, and I think it’s also the best way for him to race. He can wait for a tactical game from the others, but he can also make the race hard himself and do it that way. I think he made a good decision,” he said, praising the Frenchman’s strategy.
As for the reaction of the chasing group, Uijtdebroeks described a fluid scenario, with imperfect coordination, though the finale remained competitive. “After that it was a bit of following wheels and also a bit of playing behind, so to speak. Sometimes we worked well and other times a bit less, but I think in the end the group pulled quite well,” he added, hinting at how hard it is to organise an effective chase on this kind of stage.

A tricky route at Itzulia

The Belgian also stressed the specificity of the route, likening it to a classics-style effort, where energy management is crucial and not everything comes down to the final climb. “These kinds of stages are a bit like the classics, more complicated. It’s not just a summit finish; it’s also about how much energy you spend and where you choose to do it. But overall I think my team supported me very well throughout the day,” he said, highlighting the squad’s collective work.
Finally, Uijtdebroeks was satisfied with his ride and optimistic for the coming days, making clear his goal is to keep building within the race. “I’m happy and we’re going to build on this in the next few days,” concluded the Movistar rider, whose performance confirms his progression and cements him as a rider to watch for the remainder of Itzulia.
