Joshua Tarling is a tremendously talented time-trialist, and in 2024 he's found his talent in the classics and also as a strong climber. However in the discipline he specializes in, he finds competition of the very best level in the world and it's become hard to take wins. At the UAE Tour this Tuesday, he aims to take his first win since the national championships.
"I'm going to go all in. I want it. I need it, and I think the team does as well so we're all in. For the team, it'll get things rolling and for me as well, I would like to be in a bit better of a place, but I think I need a win after struggling with the confidence," Tarling told Cyclingnews.
With INEOS having abandoned the Etoile de Bessèges, it left the Briton without the chance to take a possible win or even fight for GC there, so his first TT of the year will come in the form of UAE's stage 2 - a 12-kilometer flat time-trial, well suited to his abilities.
"I think it's been a decent start, I'm happy. I was happier in Marseille than I was in Bessèges, but I think I'm getting there". He will have to battle the likes of Tadej Pogacar, Mikkel Bjerg and Jay Vine, all part of an UAE Team Emirates - XRG that is ready to take the spotlight in their home race this week.
DS Oli Cookson believes in the young Briton and his chances of taking the win and potentially the leader's jersey on the day. "This time last year he won in O Gran Camiño and I think he's had a good winter, he's in a good place which we saw in Marseille and then obviously he didn't get to race the TT in Bessèges".
