Jai Hindley is yet to make a decision on which Grand Tour he will ride in 2023, with the Vuelta a Espana route still to be revealed. It may be more than one as was the case in 2022, and he admits he would like to repeat his best ever year on the bike.
“Winning the Giro changes your career. I've always dreamed of winning a Grand Tour," Hindley said in an interview with Marca. "In addition, the Giro is very special because it is ridden in the most beautiful country in the world with many cycling fans. The course is also often spectacular. He is therefore not inferior to the Tour de France or the Vuelta a España for me."
Whilst the Giro d'Italia features a monstrous final week with several high-mountain stages, just as the ones that have seen the Australian soar to the pink jersey this year, it also has almost 70 kilometers of individual time-trials. The Tour de France however, will be a completely climber-focused route, where even the small ITT is suited to the climbers.
“Whether I will appear at the start will depend on the routes of the Tour and the Vuelta and the wishes of the team. But I would love to return to the Giro," he continues. Having the title and an assured number 1 at the Giro however could influence his decision, aswell as an expectedly more modest startlist.
“At the moment, riders like Pogačar, Evenepoel and Vingegaard are of a very high level. I will definitely have to take them into account. We are at a very good time for the sport," he concluded. Whilst Pogacar will be targeting the Tour de France, it is yet uncertain where Jonas Vingegaard and many other general classification contenders will focus on.
