Miguel Ángel López has not had a good season, but he is still in time to turn it around at the
Vuelta a Espana, with the Colombian showing good signs in the first summit finish of the second week.
After an early DNF at the Giro d'Italia, López' season took a very heavy hit. A short suspension after being involved in a drug trafficking risked seeing the rest of his 2022 down the drain, however he managed to return to competition at the Vuelta a Burgos where he showed good form. The first week at the Vuelta didn't go to perfection, however he avoided any meaningful mishap, sitting in eighth position after stage nine.
However in the second week things are turning for the leader of
Astana Qazaqstan Team. A Top10 in the individual time-trial was a promising result, and yesterday at Peñas Blancas he kept up with the GC favourites until the final meters of the stage. “I was able to stay with the favorites almost until the finish," he said after the finish. The performance earned saw him overtake João Almeida in the GC.
López was on the attack aswell briefly, firstly following and then attacking Enric Mas and Remco Evenepoel. However gaps were not meant to be, and the Colombian tried to keep his position into the finish line where Remco Evenepoel dished out a gruelling pace. "If I had attacked myself, it wouldn't have been smart. The pace was too high. In the last 200 meters you can see that I still miss that little bit. But we are only halfway through," he concluded.
