Enric Mas has tested Remco Evenepoel in the first summit finish of the second week at the Vuelta a Espana, however was unable to take results from it as the Belgian remained rock solid in the race lead.
“Everyone who has held up in our group is competing for the podium. Those are all riders to watch out for. The final was still quite tough, but in the end I didn't lose any time," Mas said in a post-race interview. With José Joaquín Rojas and Nelson Oliveira in the day's breakaway, Enric Mas had riders to bridge across to in the final climb, and those are the tactics Movistar Team opted for in the ascent to Peñas Blancas where Mas put in two moves with around five kilometers to go. They didn't have the desired outcome however as Remco Evenepoel readily followed both, but heading into the finish the Belgian couldn't distance Mas aswell.
“He is doing very well for the time being. I spoke to him briefly about his crash and he told me that nothing was wrong," the Spaniard said about Evenepoel. "He had slipped away, nothing more. But he hasn't shown any weaknesses yet, even though this climb wasn't too hard
Mas kept his 3:03-minute disadvantage to Evenepoel, but will have more stages later this week where he will be able to test the Belgian. “I have already drawn a conclusion after today, but we will keep it to ourselves," he concluded.
