"I still have a lot of motivation and I believe I can win" - Thomas de Gendt targeting one last Grand Tour hurrah in final professional season

One of the most universally liked riders in the peloton, Thomas de Gendt will be much-missed when his professional career comes to a close at the end of 2024.

"You do everything for the last time and that does matter, but emotions will be something for the last months of the season," the Belgian told Sporza from his final team presentation, not yet fully feeling the emotions of his final season.

When asked about his goals for the 2024 season, de Gendt is clear. "I'm trying to win a race. I still have a lot of motivation and I believe I can win," says the 37-year-old, five-time Grand Tour stage winner. "I dream of winning a stage in the Vuelta. Then I would have won 2 stages in each big tour, a nice round number to end with."

One last appearance at the Tour de France however, doesn't seem likely. "I tried to get into the selection last year, but I notice that the competition is too big. I don't chase it," he confirms.

For de Gendt though, 2024 will mostly be about enjoying himself. "I noticed 2 years ago how there is a different vibe going around. With Arnaud De Lie we have someone who can win a lot and with him in the selection, you try even harder," he says, praising his Lotto Dstny teammates.

"Arnaud is one of the future big men in Belgium and the general level in the team is increasing. There is more friendship and atmosphere," de Gendt concludes with a smile. "A few years ago that was less. Then everyone was a bit sad on the bus after the race, now it's laughing and making jokes. You feel like going to the race."
