The final stage of the Volta a Catalunya delivered a spectacular showdown on the Montjuïc circuit, culminating in a career-defining moment for NSN Cycling Team's Brady Gilmore. The young Australian timed his sprint to perfection to snatch his first WorldTour victory ahead of Dorian Godon and Remco Evenepoel, while Jonas Vingegaard safely navigated the chaos to secure the overall general classification.
The final stage of the Volta a Catalunya had everything. Jonas Vingegaard, Remco Evenepoel and Florian Lipowitz traded blows repeatedly between the 40 and 25 kilometre marks, but none of them could crack the others and the GC battle ended in a stalemate, with Vingegaard confirmed as overall winner.
Up front, Red Bull led out a dangerous downhill sprint, Dorian Godon hit the front and looked to have the stage won, until Brady Gilmore came from behind and snatched the victory in the final metres. A stunning first WorldTour win for the young Australian.

A season of near misses finally pays off

Gilmore has been knocking on the door all season. Two fourth places at the Tour Down Under, a close call at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race - the results have been there, but the win had been frustratingly out of reach. Until today. "Yeah, no, it's a good feeling. This level is super high and everyone's so strong, so it's super hard. To finally get it done, it's amazing. It feels awesome," he said in a post-race interview.
The confidence, he admitted, had been building throughout the week and indeed throughout the whole year. "I started the year off good at the Tour Down Under. I had two fourth places. I almost won the last stage of the Tour Down Under, but maybe I got a bit excited and went early. And then to be close at the Cadel Evans race also."
"Yeah, I definitely had confidence here, but it's been a super hard week. I just really rode smart today, and my teammates helped me amazingly. I could just get there in the end and time my sprint perfectly."

The perfect final kilometre

What made the victory all the more impressive was how Gilmore executed it. Godon, a rider who knows this finish well having raced it several times before, hit the front at exactly the right moment and looked certain to win. Gilmore, racing the stage for the first time, read it perfectly.
"I knew, in the radio I could hear, that I had to get onto Dorian Godon's wheel. And I also knew this myself. So I just followed him because he was probably the favourite for the stage in that sprint. If you're behind him, you can follow his move. And then when he opened up, I just waited. I knew I had to gowhen I saw 150 meters to go, and I just timed it perfectly," he explained.
For a rider in his first WorldTour season, the result is extraordinary. But Gilmore was measured and clear-eyed about where he stands. "It's only my first year as a pro in the WorldTour. So to get a win, it's amazing. Obviously, I hope to get more wins and just grow as a rider and gain experience, really. It's my first year, so yeah, it's up from here," he said.
The victory also came on a special day for NSN Cycling Team as a whole. Football legend Andrés Iniesta visited the team bus in the morning and sat in on the pre-stage meeting. "We had the plan of what we were going to do, and we did it. I think we showed him how good we can be, and yeah, it's just been amazing," Gilmore concluded.
