ugly crash by Ben Turner
Ben Turner’s In Flanders Fields came to an abrupt and alarming end after the INEOS Grenadiers rider was sent somersaulting over his handlebars in a high-speed crash that appeared to come from nowhere.
The incident occurred during a tense phase of the race, with teams beginning to organise behind the leading group. Turner, who had earlier been active and was the focus of INEOS’ efforts in the chase, suddenly lost control and was launched forward off his bike, flipping over the front in a heavy fall.
Replays offered little immediate explanation for the crash, with no obvious contact or obstruction visible as Turner hit the ground at speed. The unpredictability of the fall underlined the constant danger in these conditions, even outside of the more technical sectors of the race.
Despite the severity of the impact, initial signs suggested Turner avoided serious injury. He was seen moving after the crash, though his race was effectively over, bringing a premature end to what had been an aggressive ride. The incident also disrupted INEOS Grenadiers’ plans, with Turner one of the riders they had been working for as the race began to take shape behind the front group.
