Two times a winner and now six times a podium finisher. Michael Matthews has once again performed strongly at the GP de Québec, but he couldn't do better than a third place in a day where the sprinters battled for the win.
“Yeah, another GP Québec done and it’s another podium finish. I think we were pretty close to the win but yeah, this time I just mistimed my sprint little bit was but in front a little bit early," Matthews said in a post-race interview. "I assumed a lot of the guys behind me, and Christophe Laporte were pinned but yeah, they came with speed from behind."
Team Jayco AlUla were one of the many that paced to keep things together for a bunch sprint. The final lap was raced conservatively and this was the scenario which the peloton faced. Jumbo-Visma led the sprint for the Frenchman and Matthews trusted he was in the right position, but he was surprised by Corbin Strong's acceleration which saw the leadout become ineffective, and Matthews didn't have the legs to sprint for the win.
"I think for me and the team it’s a good podium," he said, still having put on a good effort to finish behind strong and race winner Arnaud De Lie. "I think for me I needed it after the last races a lot of bad luck so yeah, another podium for the team in Canada and I have to say that the team rode really well, and I think we can be happy with this result today. Another chance on Sunday in Montreal.” In Montréal, the Australian is expected to be a prime favourite.
