Romain Bardet was the 'best of the rest' behind Tadej Pogacar at Liege-Bastogne-Liege 2024, taking a second place that, in addition to great personal satisfaction for getting a podium in a Monument, continues to prove his form ahead of the Giro d'Italia.
"I'm very happy, I knew it was going to be very difficult, but I had the impression that I could do well at the end because of my tactical knowledge of the race, knowing where I could go is something I took advantage of as well as having very good legs," reflected the Frenchman post-race to Cycling Pro Net, having come straight to Liege from a top-5 overall at the Tour of the Alps.
He insisted that he knew that if he arrived at the top with a few seconds of advantage he was practically assured of victory because the rear group would have to get together to catch him, something that is difficult to do:
"It was tactical after the summit, it was hard, but I knew that if I had a dozen seconds it could be enough because they had to understand each other very well to hunt me down," Bardet concludes.
