The Briton had already shown immense talent on his neo-pro season last year in the classics, and now he's turned that power into a victory. The route at the
Vuelta a Murcia was favourable to the puncheurs such as him, even though the main ascent of the day had been cut due to bad weather. Turner entered the final sprint well positioned amidst the very complicated finale with several very tight corners, and had the power to outsprint Simon Clarke into the victory.
“I didn't want to get locked in. After yesterday's recon I knew I had to start early. I was in the right wheel and came out good. The legs were also good," he explained. It was a victory of intelligence and tactics as much as it was of having the legs, and the 23-year old has broken through a very important career achievement.
“At the end of the game my radio stopped working so I wasn't sure if anyone was still out. I was a bit confused. That's why I didn't cheer," Turner said. The
Vuelta a Murcia is the first victory of his career. "Hopefully it won't be the last. It's nice to have a win in February. Let's see what the rest of the season brings.”
