The opening weekend of the Vuelta a Espana didn't see too many crashes, however Richard Carapaz has been unable to avoid them completely on stage three, as he collided into road furniture on the last Dutch stage.
"He just had a little tumble, he hit a cone. Fortunately he’s fine. That’s the thing with this game, every meter counts. He was laughing about it," Rod Ellingworth, performance manager for INEOS Grenadiers, said of the Ecuadorian at the end of the third day. Although not seeing any mass crashes, the likes of Michael Woods and Steff Crash were forced to abandon the race after crashing, but the leader of INEOS Grenadiers didn't have the same outcome.
“For us, it’s been really good. They’ve all stayed safe, which is one thing,” Ellingworth told reports. “They’ve put in a really good team time trial and the last two days, they’ve done exactly what they said they wanted to do. The guys are all in good spirits".
The roads of the Netherlands were highly criticized by Alejandro Valverde who said that "I don’t think there were any more villages out there that we could have gone through," in which road furniture and risky situations were frequently present.
