Jonas Vingegaard began stage 14 of the
Tour de France in control of the Maillot Jaune by 9 seconds ahead of his main rival,
Tadej Pogacar. Following the
Jumbo-Visma leader around France, are his mother and father.
Claus Vingegaard, the father of the reigning Tour de France champion, spoke at the roadside to NBC Sports Cycling, the American coverers of the race. Speaking about Jonas's philosophy, he explains part of his mentality and its base in Danish culture. "Janteloven is something that you should not believe you are more special than the rest," he reveals.
"He has been fighting for this all his life and now he is one of the best in the world," Vingegaard senior continues. But when asked if his son has always been one of the best, even when he was a child in junior races, "Absolutely not!" is he defiant answer.
"He didn't win anything when he was young he was absolutely nothing," he continues. "He was getting better when he was 17, then 18 was better again and 19 was even better. Then it kept going, boom, boom, boom."
