Tom Dumoulin led the GC group into the final meters of the Grand Colombier back in 2020 where
Tadej Pogacar sprinted to victory. Last afternoon the break took the victory but the Slovenian hit just as hard in the final ramp, however the Dutch rider argues that
Jumbo-Visma remains in control.
"They've been forced on the defensive for a week now and it's time for them to go back to their first tactic, which they started the Tour with. Demolish Pogacar and make the race hard," Tom Dumoulin told De Avondetappe. "Pogacar is not going down (downhill, ed.) very well this Tour, Vingegaard is going down better. Maybe he can buy some time there."
Stage 14 to Morzine sees a downhill finish after the ascent of the Col de Joux Plane, weather forecast may hint at some rain, and the former pro argues that attacks on the descent are possible and Vingegaard could even give it a go. However tactics wise Dumoulin believes Jumbo-Visma is now looking more focused than in other days regarding the yellow jersey.
“If I were UAE, I would follow," former Jumbo-Visma rider Laurens Ten Dam argues on the rival team. "And then try to attack on the final climb and bet on the bonuses at the finish. You see more the Jumbo plan than the UAE plan for this ride," he said, with the tactics having worked at the Grand Colombier where the 17-second gap was turned into an 9-second gap because of a late acceleration.
