Mikel Landa, one of professional cycling’s most consistent
and respected climbers, has revealed an ambitious goal for the remainder of his
career. The 35-year-old Spaniard,
who will race both the Giro d’Italia and the
Tour de France in 2025, has expressed his desire to take on the ultimate
endurance test: riding all three Grand Tours—Giro, Tour, and Vuelta—in the same
season.
Speaking to Marca, Landa reflected on the one
challenge he still hopes to achieve in his career. “I would like to do all
three Grand Tours in one season,” Landa admitted. “If I don’t do it, I will
regret it. But I still have time.”
The physical and mental demands of competing in all three
Grand Tours within a single season are immense, particularly in modern cycling,
where the competition is fiercer, and recovery is more crucial than ever. Landa
acknowledged these challenges, saying, "With the high demands that are
made these days, it won't be easy. Still, it's something that keeps pulling. I
would like to do it like Marino and co did in the past."
Marino Lejarreta, whom Landa referenced, is one of the few
riders in history to complete all three Grand Tours in a single season multiple
times. However, the feat has become increasingly rare in recent decades as the
intensity of the sport has evolved.
In 2024, Landa demonstrated he is still at the tip of his
game, finishing fifth at the Tour de France and eighth at the Vuelta a España
while riding for Soudal – Quick-Step. These performances underscore his ability
to compete at the highest level, even as he approaches the latter stages of his
career.
