A day where a breakaway was likely to succeed, and the most hinted rider - Lennard Kämna - has not failed to deliver, getting himself in the day's breakaway and taking the win atop Mount Etna for BORA - hansgrohe.

At the start of the day many interviews indicated that the day could be fought between a breakaway, and the most discussed names made their way into the front group early on in the day. With the peloton happy to let a large group go up the road, the win and pink jersey was to be discussed between the escapees. Stefano Oldani, Lilian Calmejane, Valerio Conti, Lennard Kämna, Rémy Rohcas, Davide Villella, Diego Camargo, Erik Fetter, Rein Taaramäe, Alex Cataford, Gijs Leemreize, Sylvain Moniquet, Mauri Vansevenant and Juan Pedro López.

With small crashes in the peloton, the group went up the road - despite Mathieu van der Poel trying to bridge across. Miguel Ángel López abandoned throughout the day with hip pain, and Simon Yates tumbled early on, affecting the race.

In the fight for the stage win Stefano Oldani attacked early on with 28 kilometers to go before the categorized climb began. He took a gap into the final climb, and held it as the remaining break slowly got reduced. López attacked with 12 kilometers to go, eventually bridging across to the Italian and immediately dropping him.

Lennard Kämna eventually came from behind aswell, linking up with the Spaniard in the final kilometers. The duo worked together, as they both had something to gain, and went in for the final sprint where the German easily took the win. However, López earned a trip to the podium as the Spaniard emerged from the volcano with the pink jersey.

In the peloton, INEOS Grenadiers pushed the pace in the final climb, but to no effect as most contenders arrived safely in the group - with Tom Dumoulin and Vincenzo Nibali shedding time at the line.
