Luke Plapp has had a tremendous start to the
UAE Tour, and he's looking to keep it running as the
INEOS Grenadiers rider has jumped into the race lead on stage 2. Now, with the first summit finish - and climb of the race in fact - he faces a more difficult challenge.
“For me, Remco is the best rider in the world and I like to compete with him. We are rivals, but at the same time good friends in the peloton. On Monday we worked together as if we were teammates," Plapp said at the start of stage 3. He was referring to the work done on the echelons on the opening day, where the two gained 51 seconds over the peloton alongside Pello Bilbao.

A strong team time-trial yesterday by INEOS and some bonus seconds on the opening day earned him the lead. Jebel Jais will be a climb well suited to his climbing abilities, he admits it himself: “Jebel Jais is a climb that suits me. Filippo Ganna has arrived among the first."
However, he is likely to be tested. In the bigger picture however the Australian champion knows where the true danger lies. "Jebel Hafeet Sunday is already a different story. I think Adam Yates was shocked after the team time trial. For UAE Emirates it is now a bit of a must, isn't it?” he concluded.
